Avoid Costly Penalties for
2011 Taxes and Save the Dates to Lower the 2012 Tax Bill!
Following the
tradition of the last seven years, the Galveston and League
City branches of the
Galveston County Tax Office (GCTO) will be open from 7 am to
6 pm, Tuesday, January 31st, the last day to pay 2011 taxes
without penalty and interest. The Santa Fe and Texas City
Tax Office branches will be open normal operation hours of 8
am to 5 pm.

Become a Volunteer Deputy
Registrar
The Galveston County
Tax Office has been providing training to individuals
interested in serving as Volunteer Deputy Registrars (VDR)
for nearly a year, thus far certifying 84 graduates. VDRs
work in partnership with County Voter Registrars across the
State, assisting citizens in registering to vote.

Pay Half Now – Half
Later with Split Pay!
Tax bills will
be on their way to Galveston County property owners the end
of October and a very important change has occurred.
Galveston County Commissioners reinstated the split payment
option which requires that one-half of your property taxes
must be paid by November 30th
in order
to avoid penalty and interest on the second half which will
not be due until June 30th.

The August 1 deadline for Galveston County governments to
opt out of the recently re-established split payment option
by County Commissioners has passed and only four County Tax
Office property tax collection customers have chosen not to
participate – the City of Dickinson, Dickinson Independent
School District, Galveston County MUD#12 (Bayou Vista) and
Galveston College.

Constitutional Amendments Election is likely to
be very low. The highest turnout since 1999 in Galveston County
occurred in 2003 (13.3%) and in Texas in
2005 (18%).

payment is due by May 31st in order to avoid hefty penalty
and interest charges (6% penalty and 1% interest). The

Volunteer Registrar Class
The Galveston County Tax Office is proud to announce the
graduation of its first class of volunteer deputy
registrars!
January 21st marked the beginning of a monthly training
class that will be held at 2:00 pm the third Friday of each
month in the Commissioner Courtroom, 722 Moody in Galveston.
The hour long class covers all aspects of becoming a
volunteer voter registrar and the duties and
responsibilities the position carries.

AG Ruling Deemed Taxpayer
Victory In January of this year,
District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk requested an opinion from
the Texas Attorney General on behalf of Tax Assessor
Collector Cheryl E. Johnson pertaining to valuations of
homesteaded property after Hurricane Ike. Yesterday, the
opinion was rendered.
